Frequently Asked Crypto Staking Questions
What is crypto staking?
Crypto staking is the process of locking up certain cryptocurrencies on a blockchain network to help validate transactions. In return, you earn rewards, often paid in the same cryptocurrency you staked. Think of it like earning interest on a deposit, but for blockchain networks.
How does staking work inside an IRA?
When you stake crypto inside a Retired.com IRA, the process works the same as staking on any platform, but the rewards are deposited directly into your tax-advantaged account. This means your staking rewards grow tax-deferred in a Traditional IRA or tax-free in a Roth IRA.
Which cryptocurrencies can I stake?
Staking eligibility depends on the blockchain protocol. Retired.com supports staking on a selection of eligible assets, including: ADA (Cardano), ETH (Ethereum), Solana (SOL), Polkadot (DOT) and SUI (SUI).
What kind of rewards can I expect?
Staking reward rates vary by cryptocurrency and network conditions. Rates can range from a few percent to higher yields depending on the asset and the current staking environment. Our team can provide current reward rate information for each eligible asset.
Are there lock-up periods for staking?
Some assets require a lock-up period during which your staked crypto cannot be traded or withdrawn. Lock-up terms vary by asset. Our team provides full transparency on lock-up requirements before you commit to staking.
What are the risks of staking?
Staking carries risks including price volatility of the staked asset, potential lock-up periods that limit liquidity, and protocol-level risks such as slashing (a penalty for validator misbehavior on certain networks).
What fees apply to staking?
Retired.com charges a 1% per-trade fee when purchasing staking-eligible assets and a $50 monthly account fee. Specific staking-related fees, if any, are disclosed before you opt in. There are no account setup fees and no transfer fees.
